Gravity still pulls hard on the International Space Station, and yet it never falls to Earth. Astronauts from many countries live and work aboard this orbiting laboratory, running experiments and studying our planet from above.

The ISS is a large spacecraft that orbits Earth: part home, part laboratory, part observatory, built to be lived in rather than just visited.

How Does the ISS Stay in Space?

The ISS stays in space because it is constantly moving around Earth. This movement creates a force that balances the pull of Earth's gravity. It's like swinging a bucket of water around – the water stays in the bucket because of the circular motion.

So the ISS is not sitting still up there. It is racing, and the racing is the whole trick. Stop it moving and it would come straight down.

The station overhead was never launched as one piece — it was assembled section by section in orbit, and it is still crewed by astronauts from many countries working side by side, studying the planet they came from.
