Mixing playdough, then playing with it A kitchen table. On the left a measuring cup marked up the side holds flour, with a heap of it spilt beside the cup. In the middle a wide bowl holds a mound of dough with a wooden spoon standing up in it. Above, a small bottle of food colouring tips over and two drops fall into the bowl. On the right the finished dough has been played with three ways: one ball left round, one rolled into a long coiled snake, and one squashed flat with three finger dents pressed into it.

Make Delicious Homemade Playdough

About 3 minutes

This playdough is made from five common kitchen ingredients, and you can knead in food coloring to mix as many colors as you like.

Mix it

  1. In the mixing bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
  2. In a separate cup, mix the water, vegetable oil, and a few drops of food coloring.
  3. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients while stirring. Keep stirring until a dough forms.
  4. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. If it is too dry, add a tiny bit more water.
  5. Knead the dough with your hands for a few minutes until it is smooth.
  6. To make several colors, divide the dough into smaller balls and knead a few drops of a different food coloring into each one.

Why this works

Every ingredient is doing a job:

Keep the playdough in a sealed tub or a food bag between plays, and it will stay soft for a long time.
