Treasure Hunt Math: Crack the Code
This is a treasure hunt where each answer is also a direction. Solve the sum, and the sum tells you where the next clue is hidden. Get one wrong and you end up searching the wrong room — which is part of the fun.
One person hides the clues; everybody else hunts.
- Paper and a pencil
- Small slips of paper to write the clues on
- A box to be the treasure chest
- Something to put in it — a toy, a snack, a good rock
- A grown-up to hide everything before you start
For the Person Hiding
- Write each clue on its own slip. A clue has two parts: a sum, and where the previous answer sends you.
- Work out every answer first, and write the list down for yourself. If a clue goes in the wrong place the whole hunt stops there.
- Hide them in order, backwards. Put the last clue in its hiding place first and work back to the first, so you never hide a clue somewhere you have not chosen yet.
- Keep the answers to the last clue — those numbers are the code on the box.
- Hand over clue one and stay out of the way.
The Hunt
Each clue gives a sum. Write the answer down and keep the list — you will need all four numbers at the end.
- Clue 1 — near the front door. What is 12 + 8?
- Clue 2 — hidden where the answer to clue 1 sends you. What is 5 × 3?
- Clue 3 — hidden where the answer to clue 2 sends you. What is 30 − 10?
- Clue 4 — hidden where the answer to clue 3 sends you. What is 8 ÷ 2?
- Clue 5 — the last hiding place. It holds the code.
The code is the four answers in the order you found them: 20 – 15 – 20 – 4.
Cracking the Code
Look at your four answers. Two of them are the same number, 20, reached by different sums — 12 + 8 and 30 − 10. That is worth noticing, because it is the thing that makes a code like this hard to guess. Knowing one answer tells you nothing about the next.
Make It Harder
- Use bigger numbers, or two-step sums like "double 7, then add 6".
- Add a wrong clue that leads somewhere with a note saying try again.
- Turn numbers into letters — 1 = A, 2 = B, and so on — so the final code spells a word instead of being digits.
That last one is how a lot of real secret codes begin: not with something unbreakable, but with a simple swap that both people agree on beforehand.
