On the island of Crete, archaeologists uncovered a palace with so many rooms, hallways, and courtyards that ancient storytellers turned it into the legend of the Labyrinth — the maze where the Minotaur lived. Who Were the Minoans?

The Minoans lived on the island of Crete in Greece thousands of years ago. They built palace complexes, made detailed pottery, and developed their own writing system. Imagine doing all of that without a single car, phone, or computer.

The Palace of Knossos

One of the most impressive things the Minoans built was the Palace of Knossos. It wasn't just a home for the king; it was a huge complex with many rooms, hallways, and courtyards.

• Advanced plumbing systems for water and drainage.
• Storage rooms for food and other goods.

Minoan Art and Culture

They made pottery, jewelry, and sculptures that were very detailed and colorful. Many of their artworks show scenes of nature, animals, and people enjoying life. They also had religious beliefs and rituals, some of which are still a mystery to us.

What Happened to the Minoans?

The Minoan civilization mysteriously disappeared around 1450 BCE. Scientists think it might have been due to a volcanic eruption on a nearby island, earthquakes, or perhaps even an invasion. We still don't know for sure.

And that is worth stopping on, because it is how history actually works. Some things we can be certain about, because they are still standing there and can be measured. Others we genuinely do not know, and an honest historian says so.

Some of what we know about the Minoans is settled — the island they lived on, the palace they built, the plumbing that ran through it. Why their civilization actually ended is still an open question nobody has answered.
