Why Your Ears Invent the Beat

Find a pencil and tap it on a table. Same strength every time, same gap every time. Keep going for about twenty taps.

Listen to what you are hearing rather than to what you are doing.

Somewhere in there it will have stopped being tap tap tap tap and turned into ONE two ONE two. Or maybe ONE two three. One of the taps got promoted.

Now here is the thing worth stopping over. Every tap was the same. You made sure of that. So the promotion did not come from your hand.

Nothing in the sound says where to start

A row of identical clicks contains no information about grouping at all. There is no first one, because the first one is only first if you decide where to begin counting.

Your brain will not leave it like that. Even when every sound is identical, it gathers them into twos or threes and puts a stress on the front of each group.

One row of discs, every one identical, read two different ways. Neither reading is more correct than the other, and the discs cannot settle the argument, because the grouping was never in the discs.

Try to prove this to yourself. Go back to tapping, get a ONE two going, and then — without changing the tapping at all — switch to hearing ONE two three.

It takes a moment, and then it flips. Same taps. Different music.

You cannot do that to something that is really out there in the sound. You can only do it to something you supplied.

What a musician does about it

If your ear is going to invent a grouping regardless, a musician has two options. Let you invent your own, or tell you which one they want.

Telling you is called giving the beat an accent, and there are more ways to do it than just playing louder.

None of that changes how fast the music is going. It only changes where you feel the one, and that is what turns a stream of sound into a march or a waltz.

A drummer is playing at exactly the same speed throughout. Which of these tell your ear where the ONE is, and which deliberately hide it?

  • A loud kick drum on the first beat of every group
  • A long low bass note landing every four beats
  • A short silence just before a beat
  • Every single beat played at exactly the same volume
  • Accents landing between the beats instead of on them
  • Accents arriving in a group of five, then a group of three

The second list is not a list of mistakes. Music that hides the one on purpose is a whole style, and the reason it feels restless is that it keeps your ear working on a job it cannot finish.

Try it on somebody else

  1. Tap twenty perfectly even taps on a table while a friend listens with their eyes shut.
  2. Ask them to say which taps felt like the strong ones. Do not tell them what you expect.
  3. Try it with somebody else. Then somebody else again.
  4. Some will say twos. Some will say threes. Some will hear no grouping for a while and then one will arrive on its own.

You gave every one of them the same sound. They did not all get the same music out of it, and none of them was wrong.

You clap a completely even rhythm and two friends disagree about where the strong beat is. Who is right?

Why this is worth knowing

You are not a microphone. You do not take in a sound and store it; you take it in and immediately start organising it, and by the time you notice you have heard something, the organising has already happened.

The beat is the easiest place to catch yourself doing it. Tap a pencil, wait for the one to arrive, and you have watched your own ear add something to the world that was not in it.
